Infosys Technologies has bagged a Euro 31 million three-year contract to set up a research and development facility for Alstom, a French engineering group that makes power plants, locomotives and ships. Alstom has 18 R&D centers across the globe. The center on the Infosys campus is the first one set up in partnership with a third-party service provider. Alstom-Infosys center will be the biggest among its R&D centers. Alstom will spend 20 percent of its R&D budget on its power business in India, said Philippe Joubert, president, Alstom Power.

The global merger of Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) and Alstom will result in the creation of the second biggest power generation entity in India. Bharat Heavy Electricls Ltd will continue to be the leader with a share of about 80 percent of the Indian power business. Alstom will benefit from the merger in India as ABB is stronger with a manufacturing facility at Baroda for turbines and in West Bengal for boilers while Alstom has only a manufacturing facility for turbines at Calcutta.

ABB will build three gas compressor stations equipped with GT10 industrial gas turbines from ABB ALSTOM POWER, pressure reducing systems to transport the gas through local networks as well as flow metering facilities. The pipeline, the longest in the world, is designed to transport natural gas more than 4,000 kilometers from the Yamal peninsula in Western Siberia through Belarus to Poland and Germany.
The order is the second won by ABB for compressor stations along the Polish sector of the pipeline. The first order for two stations was awarded in 1998, with one of the stations turned over to the customer
